Members eat together, work together, and play together.\u00a0 Specialized knowledge, tools, childcare, and transportation are often shared to help out a neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>In most cohousing communities, most residents own their own home, and share both indoor and outdoor common spaces.\u00a0 A shared Common House is used for community meals and other activities, such as meetings, concerts, art projects, and celebrations of personal and community milestones.\u00a0 The Common House usually contains guest rooms to accommodate visiting family and friends of members.\u00a0 The Common House may also contain spaces such as playrooms, exercise rooms, laundry facilities, and library.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the community do most of the work of maintaining the Common House, land, gardens, and other community resources.\u00a0 Decisions are most often made using a consensus process.<\/p>\n<p>Cohousing was first brought to the United States from Denmark around 1985.\u00a0 There are currently approximately \u00a0110 cohousing communities in the U.S. \u00a0In addition, about 100 groups are working on planning or building a new cohousing community.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>More information about cohousing can be found at<a title=\"Cohousing USA website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cohousing.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Cohousing Association of the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The following books also contain much useful and interesting information about cohousing and about building a cohousing community:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kathyrn McCamant and Charles Durrett, with Ellen Hertzman:\u00a0<em>Cohousing A Contemporary Approach to Housing 2006, Ourselves. \u00a0<\/em>2003, Ten Speed Press, Berkeley, CA.<\/li>\n<li>Chris Hanson:\u00a0<em>The Cohousing Handbook: Building a Place for Community. \u00a0<\/em>1996, Harley &amp; Marks Publishers, Inc., Point Roberts, WA.<\/li>\n<li>Diane Leafe Christian:\u00a0<em>Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities.<\/em> 2006, New Society Publishers, Gabriola Island, BC Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What Is Cohousing?
