She drove from a house in suburban Richmond,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/virginia\">Virginia<\/a>, where she had lived for 20 years, to her new life about five hours west, in a senior cohousing project called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elderspirit.org\/\">ElderSpirit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cohousing communities are \u201cthoughtfully designed neighborhoods with private homes\u201d arranged around common areas, where people may gather and build relationships with their neighbors,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cohousingco.com\/cohousing#:~:text=noun%2C%20%5B%20koh%2Dhou%2D,meaningful%20social%20interaction%20among%20neighbors.\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to the Cohousing Company design firm. Cohousing is typically multigenerational \u2013 of the roughly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mutualofomaha.com\/advice\/health-and-well-being\/health-and-aging\/best-senior-cohousing-communities\">170<\/a>&nbsp;total cohousing units in the US, most are home to people of all ages, from young families to seniors.
